In the world of cocaine trafficking, the small Latin American country of Guyana plays a central role.

It is situated on the Atlantic coast, making it the ideal place to send drugs from Colombia to both the US and across the ocean to Europe.

Al Jazeera’s Monica Villamizar reports from the the capital city of Georgetown that the authorities are no match for the druglords.

Georgetown, Guyana – Guyanese police detained two former army officers suspected of ties to heavily armed gangsters who staged two recent shooting rampages, killing 23, an attorney for the officers said on Sunday.

Oliver Hinckson, 64, and Dorian Massay, 28, both former lieutenants in the Guyana Defense Force, were being questioned about possible links to fugitives blamed for the massacres, attorney Gregory Gaskin said.

Police Operations Commander Paul Slowe confirmed the two were in custody on Sunday, but declined further comment.

Gaskin denied his clients have any gang ties. He said the two were abruptly detained weeks after Hinckson offered to help police negotiate with gangsters to curb a recent wave of violence that has rocked the South American country. Full Story

Trinidad and Tobago is sending Guyana a supply of arms “of a special type” plus a helicopter to help track down fugitives involved in Monday’s massacre in that country, says Prime Minister Patrick Manning.
Manning was commenting on the Guyana crisis at a joint news conference with visiting Barbados Prime Minister David Thompson, at the new Diplomatic Centre.

Security had been one of the issues both discussed at their meeting, after Thompson’s arrival.

Manning said the security situation in Guyana had deteriorated with the occurrence of two massacres.

T&T’s National Security Minister Martin Joseph was in touch with his Guyanese counterpart on the situation and T&T has agreed to help in tracking down the fugitives in the current issue.

Manning said Caricom governments shared the view that crime should not be allowed to get further ahead than it already had.

Many of the crimes in territories were drug-related, he added, and Caricom states were at one in collaborating in fighting this. Full Story

Petition for President Jagdeo to seek assistance from the UN to revamp the criminal justice system of Guyana in order to stop the carnage.

I must say I disagree that the judicial system is the problem. It might be one of the many problems, but it’s not the reason of the sick criminal acts. If something isn’t done soon , God only knows what will become of Guyana. I was surprised he didn’t add the link to the petition site he mentioned so people can click it… most people wouldn’t visit because of lazyness so here it is (it’s down temporarily and should be back up soon) LINK

gtflagGunmen last night slaughtered around a dozen persons in a major assault on Bartica reminiscent of the Lusignan massacre and the dead included at least three policemen, reports this morning said.

The hour-long strafing which saw the criminals overrunning the Bartica Police Station and residents locking up in their homes raises major questions about the aims of the gunmen and the ability of the security forces to respond.

While it was difficult to obtain precise information on the chaos that ensued, Stabroek News has been able to confirm as best as possible the names of some of the dead. They are: Edwin Gilkes of Banks DIH/Citizens Bank’s premises on First Avenue; Mervin Ferreira, a guard of CBR Mining and Marcus Gonsalves, a teller of Citizen’s Bank whose body was found in his car on First Avenue. The surnames of the dead policemen have been given as Osbourne, Zakir and Fredericks.Full Story

Please feel free to post any thoughts in the comments.

It is now ten days since the murderous events that took the lives of five children, three women and three men, all Indian, in Lusignan. There has been an outpouring of sorrow and outrage in the media, over the internet and on the streets. Sadly, not even an event as horrific as this one has prevented some of us from taking sides. This week’s column is for Lusignan and for the numerous Guyanese who have stayed true to their first instinct to grieve with the village. It is also a response to the thoughtless, irresponsible and speculative statements that have been made by one side or the other, statements which will neither mourn nor heal. Full Story
